CRASSULA OVATA – JADE PLANT
Crassulas, with nearly 200 species, are native to Asia, Australia, and especially South Africa. These succulents, with fleshy leaves, are easy to propagate. Some species are frost-tolerant. Crassulas have simple flowers because their sepals, petals, and carpels are equal in number. There is considerable variation among Crassula species.
Crassula ovata, also known as Crassula portulacea, is the most widely cultivated species in the Crassulaceae family. Known as the Jade Plant, it is a slow-growing, large shrub. Our plants can reach 1–1.8 meters in height and 1–1.5 meters in crown width. They have elliptic, dark green, fleshy leaves. In winter, clusters of pink, star-shaped flowers bloom. Mature plants have an interesting trunk structure and branching, resembling natural bonsai. Frost protection is necessary as the plant is sensitive to cold.
Indoors, Jade Plants are not suitable for dark corridors or bathrooms. Direct sunlight is very important for this plant. Adequate sunlight during summer will encourage flowering in winter. During hot days, watering should be managed carefully, and plants should be placed in areas with good air circulation. Coastal climates are suitable for their growth. They can also be used in rock gardens and informal borders, especially in dry and warm areas. Propagation is easy through seeds or cuttings.
At our center, Crassula arborescens, Crassula rupestris, and Crassula ovata ‘Gollum’ are also available.
