Kalanchoe is a genus of about 125 species of tropical, succulent, plants in the family of Crassulaceae(stonecrop). The genus is predominantly native to the Old World, 60 species are from Madagascar. Only one species originates from the Americas, 116 species (included Madagascar) are from Africa and some from south-east Asia and China. Many are popular for their easy culture indoors. Kalanchoecomes from Chine’s ‘Kalan Chauhuy’ meaning “which falls and grows”, likely in reference to the plantlets that drop from some of the species. Most are shrubs or perennial herbaceous plants, but a few are annual or biennial. The largest of the genus is Kalanchoe beharensis, can reach 4 m tall, but most species are less than 1 m tall. The genus Kalanchoe may reproduce asexually by producing plantlets on leaf margins, which when distributed on a suitable substrate will form new plants.

Kalanchoe synsepala is a perennial, stoloniferous species that belonging Crassulaceae family. It is the only stoloniferous taxon of the genus. Synsepala comes from Greek ‘syn’ together and ‘sepalum’ sepal. Kalanchoe gentyi and Kalanchoe trichantha are synonym names. Plant originally found in rocky and sunny places of central and central-southern Madagascar.

Walking Kalanchoe has single, short, woody and unbranched stem up to 40 cm tall, erect or decumbent. Beautiful plant is very variable and shows a lot diversity of shapes and sizes results in a number of selected cultivars. The common form has wide, grey-green one, with bright green colouration and reddish purple margins. Leaves are few in terminal rosettes, large up to 15 cm long, 6 cm wide, sessile or subsessile, with purple band inside of marginal teeth. Margin of the leaves can be entire, dentate or sometime dissected.

The plant is called “Walking Kalanchoe,” because produce stolons from the mother plant that seek to root themselves in neighbouring soil. When the shoots first emerge, they flower and grow outward. The shoots may grow upwards up to 80 cm long. By the time, the flowers die and a mini version of the mother plant is left. Mother plant can produce many stolons and these stolons produce themselves further stolons. Natural populations consist of a tangle of stolons and rosettes of various ages and sizes. Tubular, creamy white blooms with pink anthers appear in the spring on mature plants.

Kalanchoe synsepala is an easy to grow and drought resistant plant. It takes a good deal of sun, though still prefers some shade. It is not a frost resistant plant, can withstand cold up to -2 °C for a short time. Propagation normally done from bulbils also it can be produced from seeds.

Use in Landscape: Walking Kalanchoe grown for unusual interesting foliage. It is a drought tolerant plant, suitable for xeriscaping. It is a good choice for rock and succulent gardens at non frost areas. The stolons produce themselves other stolons and forms large carpets of rosettes of various ages and sizes.

Grows well in containers and hanging baskets outside, in cold days plant should be taken to indoor.
