PENNISETUM ADVENA RUBRUM – PURPLE FOUNTAIN GRASS
Pennisetum genus covers approximately 120 species of rhizomatous or stoloniferous clump forming annual and perennial grasses. They are found in woodland and savannah in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate zones all over the world.
Pennisetum advena ‘Rubrum’ (old name Pennisetum setaceum ‘Rubrum‘) is a graceful, clumping perennial with showy, arching, purple black foliage. It belongs to Poaceae family. Genus name comes from the Latin penna meaning feather and seta meaning bristle in reference to the flowers having long, feathery bristles. Taxonomic analysis suggests the red fountain grasses are hybrids of Pennisetum macrostachys and Pennisetum setaceum. It is a burgundy-red leaved cultivar that is not invasive under any circumstances because, unlike the other pennisetum species, it rarely sets seed.
Purple Fountain Grass’s thin and long leaves may reach 100 cm height. Plant diameter reaches to 60 cm with its clumps. During summer and autumn pinkish, feathery, sterile plumes are produced, rising above the foliage. Although the grass seems to be completely evergreen in frost free zones, goes deciduous with frost. But it is root hardy to -6°C. Plant is not fussy about, type of the soil and soil ph. Also it is resistant to wind, drought and heat.
Pennisetum advena ‘Rubrum’ prefers full sun positions to bring out the rich foliage colour. Also it thrive well in part shaded position. Propagation is done by lifting and dividing congested plants in spring. Plants should be trimmed back about to ground level in winter or early spring annually to remove last season’s foliage and to encourage new growth.
Use in Landscape: Purple Fountain Grass with its attractive foliage and flower spikes creates an excellent colour contrast in landscape designs. It maintains its shape and colour throughout the summer; blooms remain lovely from June until frost. Pennisetum advena ‘Rubrum’ works well in borders and helps with erosion control. Suitable as annual waterside planting in frost zones and it is perennial in frost free climates. It is suitable for use as a feature plant, group or mass planting. This ornamental grass provides excellent texture, colour and contrast to borders, foundations and open areas. It is suitable to be used for pots. The coloured plumes are used for flower arrangements for both, cut flowers and dried flower.
