SOLANUM RANTONNETTII VARIEGATA – VARIEGATED BLUE

Solanums belong to the potato family and are evergreen shrubs. When they reach a certain maturity, they develop a highly branched structure. Some species grow in a climbing form.

Variegated Blue (Solanum Rantonnettii variegata) was first introduced in Australia in January 2002 under the name “Chloe.” Its leaves are green-and-white variegated, and its blue-purple flowers resemble those of the non-variegated Blue Solanum (Solanum rantonettii), but they are darker and more striking. Its overall growth habit is more compact compared to the standard Blue Solanum. In suitable conditions, it blooms year-round. The ideal environment is bright, sunny, and well-drained. Due to its fast growth, it can produce long branches, so occasional pruning is recommended.

The plant is slightly tolerant to short periods of frost. In Turkey, it can be grown outdoors in the Mediterranean coast and sheltered areas of the Aegean region. In other regions, plants kept outdoors in summer should be moved to a protected location during winter. Propagation is done through cuttings.

At the Palmiye Merkezi, production of Solanum rantonettii variegata started in March 2002. It was first offered for sale in Turkey on April 25, 2005: in small pots for indoor use and in large pots (limited quantities) for outdoor planting. Plants in 17 cm pots are sold for 20 YTL, and those in 25 cm pots, 100–130 cm tall, for 50 YTL.

On the same date, the Australian-origin Kangaroo Apple (Solanum avicula) was also made available. This plant can reach several meters in height in Australia, featuring pale blue flowers, 2–3 cm long elliptical yellow-red fruits, and deeply lobed leaves, creating an extraordinary appearance. It is slightly frost-tolerant but dies in cold regions; however, seeds collected from mature fruits can be easily propagated the following year. Plants in 18 cm pots are priced at 20 YTL.

In addition to these two species, Palmiye Merkezi also offers: Blue Solanum (Solanum rantonettii), Eggplant (Solanum melongena cv. Ovigerum), Thorny Solanum (Solanum sisymbrifolium), Winter Cherry (Solanum pseudocapsicum), Climbing Solanums (Solanum wendlandii, Solanum crispum, Solanum jasminoides), among others.
