Senecio rowleyanus (Synonym: Curio rowleyanus) belongs to Asteraceae (Daisy family). The Senecio genus covers over one thousand species of wildflowers, weeds, and shrubs. String of Pearls is a creeping, perennial, succulent vine, native to the drier parts of southwest Africa. It was named after British botanist G.D.Rowley. In its natural environment its stems trail on the ground, rooting where they touch and forming dense mats. It often avoids direct sunlight by growing in the shade of other plants and rocks.

Senecio rowleyanus has specialized leaves which are the size and shape of small green peas. There is a small tip on at the distal point of each leaf and a thin band of dark green tissue on the side known as a window. These windows let the light in for photosynthesis. Sphere shape of leaves, allows the most water storage and reduce the surface area exposed to the hot sun and dry air, also minimizing the water loss due to evaporation. Its trailing stems can grow 60–90 cm. String of Pearls bloom during the summer. Clusters of small white flowers are shaped of a trumpet with colourful stamens. Flowers are not showy but fragrant. The bloom will last about a month. The flower is followed by seed. The seeds have cottony filaments attached to aid the spread with winds.

Senecio rowleyanus is commonly cultivated as an ornamental plant. It can be grown indoors or outdoors at temperate climate areas. It is considered to be low maintenance. It requires infrequent watering, semi shade or a few hours of direct sunlight. Good soil drainage is essential to prevent root rot, so sandy soil is recommended. Plant must be watered thoroughly and then should be allowed to dry out slightly between watering. It will not tolerate soggy soil. Water should be cut in winter, only given just enough to prevent the soil from drying out. Winter rest (very little water and low room temperature between 1-10 °C) may promote blooming in summer.

String of Pearls may be propagated by stem cuttings and replant the leaves in potting soil. Soil should be slightly moist; they will root quickly from the axils where the leaves are attached to the stem. Feed once a month from spring through autumn with a standard liquid fertiliser diluted by half. Be vigilant against mealy bugs. For treatment an appropriate insecticide can be used.

Use in Landscape: Senecio rowleyanus is commonly cultivated as an ornamental plant. It is an ideal plant for indoors and patios in hanging baskets or containers. As a drought tolerant plant, it is suitable for xeriscaping. Despite its delicate appearance, this unusual succulent plant is a vigorous grower, quickly creeping across the surface of the pot, then cascading down the side. It may be used in rock gardens.

All parts of String of Pearls are poisonous if ingested. Sap can cause dermatitis or skin irritation to humans and pets. Symptoms included vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, and lethargy when consumed by animals.
