BAHUNİA TOMENTOSA-YELLOW BELL BAHUNİA
Bauhinia species belong to the leguminous family (Fabaceae). They include trees, shrubs, and climbing plants characterized by bilobed leaves and orchid-like flowers. Bauhinia tomentosa (the Yellow Bell Bauhinia) is a large shrub or small tree, usually not exceeding 3–4 meters in height, and is moderately tolerant of light frost.
This species, which we propagated for the first time in Türkiye and for which we conducted adaptation studies, is native to South Africa, Mozambique, India, and southeastern China. Its bilobed leaves are smaller than those of other Bauhinia species, rarely exceeding 2–3 cm in length. The bell-shaped yellow flowers, measuring 3–4 cm in length, feature a brown or dark purple to black center. Bauhinia tomentosa flowers from spring through winter and can be used in landscape design as a specimen plant or as an ornamental hedge. It can be propagated by seed or cuttings.
In addition to Bauhinia tomentosa, our Center commercially produces Bauhinia variegata and Bauhinia variegata ‘Candida’ (White Bauhinia). Furthermore, Bauhinia galpinii and Bauhinia yuanensis are included in our collection.
