ADENİUM OBESA-DESERT ROSE

One of the most beautiful among our flowering plants is undoubtedly the Desert Rose (Adenium obesa). Closely related to oleander, Desert Roses are tropical plants. Unlike oleander (Nerium oleander), they are not frost-tolerant. In temperate climates, Desert Roses are grafted onto oleander rootstock in order to improve their tolerance to frost. In the photograph, you can see the Desert Rose cultivated in our greenhouse along with its flowers.

Within our Center, among approximately 30 oleander taxa, we maintain a unique variety found nowhere else in the world: Nerium oleander ‘Esener’. This variegated oleander has not yet been officially registered. Its leaves are sickle-shaped and, unlike other cultivated variegated oleanders, which typically display yellow-green foliage, its leaves are white-green. Similarly, instead of the double, deep red flowers commonly seen in other variegated forms, this variety produces single flowers that are pale pink to white in color. In the photographs, you can see both the Desert Rose and the ‘Esener’ variety, along with selected examples from our oleander collection.
