GLORİOSA SUPERBA-GLORY LİLY
The Flame Lily, also known as the Glorious Lily, native to tropical Africa and distinguished by its bright red and yellow coloration as seen in the image, is an extremely toxic plant despite its elegant appearance. All parts of the Flame Lily are poisonous, with the roots being particularly toxic.
Due to their awareness of the plant’s poisonous nature, African communities generally avoid contact with it. However, in certain regions it has been used for medicinal purposes or to induce abortion. A documented case of poisoning involving this plant was reported in Sri Lanka. A woman who accidentally boiled and consumed the root was hospitalized and survived; however, as a result of the toxic effects, she experienced complete hair loss within 20 days. Fortunately, hair regrowth began approximately two months later.
Considering the possibility that children may be attracted to and ingest its brightly colored flowers, it is advisable not to cultivate this plant in domestic environments. In some parts of Africa, the plant has been used for suicide, leading to its designation as a “suicide plant.” Specimens of this plant can be found in the Palm Center in Türkiye.
